Today we had a small but determined group of students compete in a local tournament called Grapplepalooza, which is run by our friends in Kyuzo gym in Finglas. A big thanks to the competitors and all from the Academy who went down to support them and take the photos below.
The four guys all gave a great account of themselves in this world-cup style tournament. There were 2 groups of four in each division with the winner of each group meeting in the final to fight for gold/silver and the runner-up in each group both received a bronze.
Conor (20), a Trinity College Dublin Computer Science student and Lucas (34), originally from spain, fought it out in the final of the lightweight whitebelt division after submitting many of their opponents on the way to the showdown.
Victor (20), who is studying Psychology at University College Dublin, picked up bronze in the tough Lightweight Blue belt division which had many more experienced competitors. His takedowns were a big part of his medal winning performance.
Finally Adrian (26) a Sports Science graduate, who has a background on the Judo mats, fought in the Blue belt middleweight division despite only having a few classes of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under his belt and secured a bronze medal for his troubles.
Great results all round… Next up is training camp with Mansher (Munchi) Khera, world champion and newly promoted Marcelo Garcia Black Belt, followed by the Irish Open on the 11th May
