This is how a friend of mine described Jiu Jitsu after training for about a year. I believe his declaration sums up BJJ perfectly, below are some reasons why.
Jiu Jitsu is an exercise you want to do rather than something you feel like you have to do.
We’ve all tried an exercise or sport we knew was good for us but didn’t enjoy. That feeling of not wanting to go training or making excuses to yourself why you shouldn’t go. The fact is you just didn’t enjoy it and no matter how much you try to force yourself you’re not gonna stick at something long term you don’t like doing.
That’s where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is different. It’s never ending, you can always improve and learn some new ways to submit someone or news ways to stop someone from submitting you. You will get hooked for a variety of reasons, many of which we’ll talk about below.
In a world where health and fitness is becoming more important to the masses Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the ultimate exercise.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an incredible workout.
There are many claims out there saying grappling can burn thousands of calories in an hour, we understand these are exaggerated but we’re pretty sure they’re on the right track. It wont get you in the same shape as professional athletes but you’ll find it hard to get an equal workout, for the average Joe looking to get in shape and stay in shape Jiu-Jitsu is the perfect tool.
Grappling at almost 100% is a great confidence booster.
One of the selling points for many in choosing Jiu-Jitsu over other contact sports is the fact you don’t get punched or kicked in the head. If you ever do decide to compete you can get nearly all the excitement and intensity of an MMA match just without the striking.
You will gain great confidence in the fact that you tussle with bigger stronger people on a regular basis. Not only that, these are people who also know how to grapple and are trying to submit you at the same time. So in the worst case scenario where you need to use your grappling skills in a self defense situation, you’ll most likely be dealing with someone with zero grappling ability. The confidence alone you should have in this situation will give you an edge, now throw in all your experience defending yourself on the mats against a skilled opponent and the odds will be drastically in your favor.
BJJ is possibly the best stress relief exercise on earth.
Of course, the thing you will learn is that real self defense is to avoid these salty situations. The majority of scuffles in bars or public places can be stopped earlier by a smart, calmer person. If you have some built up stress from a long day in work or from some issues at home and some knucklehead decides to try start something with you, thats a recipe for trouble. With Jiu-Jitsu, the fact that we roll (or spar) at almost 100%, means that not only are you completely wiped out after a good session but when someone is trying to force to tap there’s no way you’re thing about those stressful situations.
So that little mental break alone is a nice reset. Now maybe when someone tries to take out their stress on you you can put your hands up, apologize, offer to buy them a drink and walk away, and if that doesn’t work you will have the confidence and ability to sort the situation out.
Doing Jiu Jitsu forces you to lead a healthier life.
Going back to how tough of a workout Jiu-Jitsu can be, you will wake up sore quite a lot. You’ll be stiff in places you didn’t know had muscles and for this reason you’ll start looking into recovery.
You’ll notice how some people seem to be less tired during training and maybe they start improving a little quicker than you. Maybe you want to add in one more training in the week. Now you start to think about performance.
The key to both recovery and performance starts with your diet and here is where most of can improve. You will probably start researching things like “diet for BJJ” and this should lead you down the route of a healthier diet and healthier lifestyle.
Grappling is something you can do for the rest of your life.
I think this is true, some of us have heard of stories from Brazil where there are groups of retired older gentlemen who meet up every day do some Jiu-Jitsu, hang out, have lunch and a couple of beers before they head home to their family then wake up and do it all again. That’s the ultimate retirement home right there.
The thing is, if you train smart and have a goal of training into your retirement it’s a possible reality. Our club alone has 3 guys in their 50’s rolling regular, now, are they training 4 times a week and berimboloing all over the place? Of course not, if they were they wouldn’t last too long. They train smart, they keep with people their own size or smaller, avoid the super competitive younger guys, avoid newer people and sit out a round every now and then. If they do decide to compete they can do so in their own age division with guys that have the same experience, if not they can just frustrate everyone in the gym with their old man strength.
The fact is they’re a very important part of the club. They give all the 30 something guys something to aim for (me too!).
So there you have it Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: A Cheat Code For Life. Get in shape, learn self defense, lower stress, gain confidence and improve your diet all as side effects to something you’ll love doing.
